The right radio depends on where and how you run your boat. Start With Fixed-Mount vs. Handheld VHF

For most boats, a fixed-mount VHF should be the primary radio. It connects to an external antenna mounted high on the vessel, transmits at up to 25 watts, and delivers substantially better range than a handheld unit. Modern fixed radios also bring valuable upgrades such as built-in GPS, Digital Selective Calling (DSC), Automatic Identification System (AIS) reception, Bluetooth handset support, and NMEA 2000 networking.

Height matters as much as advertised power. VHF works primarily by line of sight, so a properly installed antenna at the top of a T-top, radar arch, or mast can make the difference between a clear conversation and no usable signal. A premium radio paired with a poor antenna installation will not perform like a premium system.

A handheld VHF earns its place as a backup, tender radio, or solution for small vessels without a practical mounting location. Look for a waterproof, floating model with a high-capacity rechargeable battery, battery status display, and USB-C or charging-cradle convenience. Handheld units are exceptionally useful away from the helm, but their lower antenna height and typically lower transmit power limit their range. Treat one as a complement to a fixed radio when possible, not an automatic substitute.

A VHF radio's range is not a single number printed on a box. It changes with antenna height, terrain, weather, vessel position, transmitter quality, and the receiving station's antenna. Two boats with low-mounted antennas may reach each other only a few miles apart, while a vessel communicating with a high Coast Guard or marina antenna may reach much farther.

For fixed installations, prioritize the entire signal path: radio, coaxial cable, connectors, antenna, mounting hardware, and proper tuning. A 3 dB antenna radiates more evenly above and below the horizon and is often suited to boats that roll significantly. A 6 dB antenna concentrates more energy toward the horizon and is a popular choice for many powerboats. Higher-gain options can be effective on stable vessels, but may lose usefulness when a boat pitches and rolls heavily.

Choose marine-grade coaxial cable, protect every connection from moisture, and avoid unnecessary splices. Corrosion at a connector can quietly reduce performance long before a radio shows any sign of trouble. If your boat is receiving a high-end electronics refresh, have the antenna system inspected at the same time. It is a modest detail with an outsized effect on safety.

DSC Is the Feature You Hope Never to Use

Digital Selective Calling allows a VHF radio to send a digital distress alert with your boat's Maritime Mobile Service Identity, or MMSI, and position when connected to GPS. On a properly configured system, pressing and holding the protected distress button transmits information that helps responders identify your vessel and location faster than a voice-only call.

Every DSC-capable radio needs its own registered MMSI programmed accurately. This is not a setting to postpone after installation. Register the number through the appropriate authorized service, enter it carefully, and ensure the radio receives a current GPS position. For boats that travel internationally or visit foreign ports, licensing and MMSI requirements can differ from those for recreational vessels operating solely in U.S. waters. Confirm your obligations before departure.

DSC also makes routine calling more efficient. Instead of repeatedly hailing another boat by name on a calling channel, you can initiate a direct call using its MMSI, then shift to an agreed working channel. It is a polished capability, but its real value is reducing confusion when the water is busy.

Choose Features That Fit Your Helm

A feature-packed marine VHF is worthwhile only if its controls remain intuitive when your hands are wet, the cockpit is loud, and your attention is divided. A large, high-contrast display, tactile buttons, a responsive channel knob, and a dedicated Channel 16 key are practical premium features, not cosmetic extras.

AIS reception is especially valuable for cruisers and offshore boaters. It displays identification, position, course, and speed data from many equipped vessels on a compatible chartplotter or, in some models, the radio screen. AIS improves situational awareness, but it does not replace visual watchkeeping, radar, or sound judgment. Not every vessel transmits AIS data, and data can be incomplete or delayed.

NMEA 2000 compatibility deserves attention if your helm already includes a modern chartplotter, GPS source, AIS equipment, or multifunction display. It can simplify position sharing and data integration across your network. If you are assembling a new electronics package, check connector types, network capacity, and whether the radio needs an external GPS antenna or can take position data from the network.

A remote fist microphone or wireless second station can be a strong upgrade on larger boats. It lets the captain communicate from a flybridge, aft cockpit, or other working position without leaving the controls. For boats with enclosed helms, noise-canceling microphone performance and speaker clarity can be more useful than an oversized feature list.

Know the Channels Before You Need Them

Owning the radio is only half the equation. Confident operation means knowing which channels matter and using them with discipline. Channel 16 is the international distress, safety, and calling channel. Monitor it when underway, but do not hold casual conversations there. Make brief contact, then move to a working channel.

Channel 9 is commonly used as an alternate recreational calling channel in many areas, though local practices vary. Channel 13 is used for bridge-to-bridge navigational communications, particularly by commercial traffic, and must be kept clear for that purpose. Channel 22A is often used by the Coast Guard for working communications after initial contact on Channel 16. NOAA Weather Radio channels provide marine forecasts, watches, and warnings in supported coverage areas.

The most useful on-water habit is simple: listen before transmitting. Keep calls brief, speak slowly, state the station you are calling and your boat name, then pause for a response. Avoid radio checks on Channel 16 unless there is no practical alternative. A marina, towing service, or nearby boating partner may be able to assist with a radio check on an appropriate working channel.

For urgent danger to life or vessel, use the correct urgency level. A Mayday call is for grave and imminent danger. Pan-Pan communicates an urgent situation that is not immediately life-threatening. Securite is used for navigational or safety information that other mariners need to hear. These distinctions help prioritize traffic and give responding stations a clearer picture of the situation.

Installation Details That Protect Your Investment

Mount the fixed radio where it can be reached quickly from the helm without blocking gauges, displays, or sightlines. The microphone should return securely to its clip and remain accessible from the operator's normal position. Use a fused power connection sized to the manufacturer's specification, keep wiring supported and protected, and label circuits so future service is straightforward.

Before leaving the dock, test the radio's GPS position, DSC registration, transmit and receive function, external speaker, and any networked display data. Make this part of seasonal commissioning, along with checking antenna mounts, cable condition, and microphone cords. A radio that has been silent all winter should not make its first transmission during an emergency.

A fixed-mount VHF with DSC, reliable GPS input, a correctly matched antenna, and clean installation is one of the highest-value upgrades at the helm. Add a quality handheld as a charged backup, learn the essential channels, and give every regular operator a short walkthrough before a trip.
