Electronic tachometers work by counting pulses generated by the ignition system, alternator, tach signal generator or magnetic pickup sender. The tach is hooked up to +12VDC, Ground and one of the signal sources listed.

By selecting the right tach and setting the switch on the back to the correct position you let the tachometer know how many pulses are sent per each engine revolution.

This electronic tachometer measures engine speed by counting pulses generated by the ignition system, alternator, tach signal generator, or magnetic pickup sender. Installation requires connections to a 12-volt DC positive supply, ground, and one compatible signal source. The selector switch on the back of the gauge must be set to the correct position for the engine and signal type so the tachometer can accurately interpret the number of pulses produced during each engine revolution. The gauge uses a negative-ground electrical system and can be adapted for compatible 24-volt DC applications.
