The V-Twin 38-1949 Fat Bob Gas Tank Kit is designed for select Harley-Davidson FL and FX hand-shift applications. This replacement tank kit includes provisions for early-style caps, a reserve shut-off rod, and a two- or three-light dash. The cap, dash, shut-off rod, fuel petcock, and mounting hardware are not included, allowing builders to select components that match their motorcycle and custom setup. The fuel opening is positioned on the forward left side of the tank and accepts a 3/8-inch NPT petcock with male threads. Before installation, verify that the shut-off valve can be installed easily and protect the shut-off fitting by masking or plugging it during painting. All tanks and tank sets require hand fitting to achieve proper alignment for the dash and fuel-line connections. The dash may also require shimming during installation to achieve the correct height. Do not grind or sand seams or joints, and check the tank for flaws and fit before painting. Clean the inside of the tank before use, then pressure-test it and apply a suitable tank sealer to help prevent leaks and corrosion. V-Twin recommends the #41-0113 Kreem Gas Tank Combo Kit for cleaning, conditioning, and sealing. Additional recommended components include the #38-0232 Fuel Petcock Shut-Off Rod Kit, #9893-18 Parkerized Gas Tank Mounting Kit, #49-0111 Chrome 3 Speed and Reverse Left Side Tank Hand Shifter Gate, and #16-0615 Gas Tank Fuel Rod Alignment Tool. This kit is intended for restoration and replacement projects and should be test-fitted before final finishing.
